Yttrium aluminum garnet is an artificial compound without natural minerals. Homogeneous body with high hardness. Before 1960, colorless and transparent yttrium aluminum garnet was used as a substitute for diamonds. However, its refractive index is too low, and the finished product is far less beautiful than diamonds. Since the later production of substitutes with properties closer to diamonds, such as gadolinium gallium garnet, yttrium aluminum garnet is no longer used to grind fake diamonds, except as a cheap substitute for other gemstones.

Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals belong to the cubic crystal system, which is isotropic and has excellent optical and thermodynamic properties. Its mechanical properties and chemical stability are similar to those of sapphire crystals, without the birefringence effect of sapphire crystals; Pure YAG crystals have a high transmittance in the 0.25-5um region and no absorption in the 2-3um region, while the glass has a strong H2O absorption band in this region. Therefore, undoped pure YAG crystals are a new type of substrate and window material for UV and infrared optical devices. At the same time, the excellent physicochemical and optical properties of YAG crystals make them important optical crystal materials for applications in high-temperature and high-energy physical environments.
