Titanium Nitride (TiN) Powder — A "Golden," High-Hardness, Wear-Resistant Advanced Ceramic Powder

1. What is Titanium Nitride Powder?
Titanium Nitride (TiN) is a synthetic ceramic material with an NaCl-type face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure (CAS No. 25583-20-4). It is produced through the high-temperature reaction of titanium and nitrogen. While TiN crystals exhibit a characteristic metallic golden-yellow hue, the powder typically appears golden-yellow or yellowish-brown, whereas ultra-fine (nanoscale) powder often appears black.
Combining high hardness, a low coefficient of friction, excellent electrical conductivity, and superior corrosion resistance, TiN powder is one of the most widely used transition metal nitrides—often regarded as the "gold standard" among hard materials.
Chemical Formula: TiN
CAS No.: 25583-20-4
Crystal Structure: NaCl-type face-centered cubic (FCC)
Melting Point: Approx. 2930–2950°C
Density: 5.22–5.44 g/cm³
Mohs Hardness: 8–9
Appearance: Golden-yellow/yellowish-brown powder; black when ultra-fine
Electrical Conductivity: Good (exhibits both conductive and superconducting properties)
Chemical Stability: High; resistant to oxidation and corrosion; does not react with non-metals at high temperatures
2. Advantages
Extreme Hardness: With a Mohs hardness of 8–9, it offers exceptional wear resistance, significantly extending the service life of tools and components.
High Melting Point and Thermal Stability: With a melting point near 3000°C, it maintains structural stability even in high-temperature environments.
Low Coefficient of Friction: Functions effectively as a high-temperature lubricant and anti-friction material.
Conductive and Corrosion-Resistant: Combines electrical conductivity with resistance to corrosion, oxidation, and exposure to acidic or alkaline media.
Metallic Golden Luster: Mimics the appearance of gold, making it ideal for decorative gold-colored coatings.
Biocompatible and Non-toxic: Meets compliance requirements for certain food-contact and medical applications. 3. Key Application Areas
Coatings for Cutting Tools and Molds (PVD): Applied to the surfaces of turning tools, drill bits, taps, and molds to form a gold-colored, wear-resistant layer that reduces cutting wear, prevents corrosion, and extends service life.
Additives for Cemented Carbides and Cermets: Used as a reinforcing phase in tungsten carbide (WC) / cemented carbides and cermets to enhance strength and wear resistance; a potential material for partially replacing WC.
Sputtering Targets and Conductive Ceramics: Utilized in semiconductor devices, electrode materials, and electronic packaging.
PET Packaging: Improves the barrier properties and thermal performance of PET bottles/plastics, while increasing production capacity.
Solar Energy and Energy-Saving Coatings: Enhances the efficiency of vacuum solar collector tubes; serves as a high-emissivity, energy-saving coating for high-temperature furnaces; and is used for military-grade glass coatings.
Decorative and Gold-Imitation Applications: Provides gold-colored decorative coatings for items such as jewelry and watch cases.
Nanoscale Products: Characterized by small particle size, high specific surface area, >80% infrared absorption, and >85% ultraviolet shielding; used in heat-insulating coatings and automotive ceramic films.
4. Available in a wide range of specifications, from micron-scale to nanoscale. Products can be customized based on particle size (D50), specific surface area, purity, and nitrogen content to meet the specific requirements of processes such as coating, sintering, and filler application. High-purity TiN powder can achieve a purity level of over 99.2%.
