Its largest role is as a precursor for zirconia and other zirconium chemicals, and it is also widely used as adsorbent, catalyst raw material and functional filler.
Precursor for high‑purity zirconia powder (most important use)
When calcined at 500–600 °C, it decomposes into nano‑zirconia. It is used to produce 3Y/5Y yttria‑stabilized zirconia, dental ceramics, structural wear‑resistant ceramics, refractory materials, thermal barrier coatings and ceramic target materials. It can also synthesize various zirconium salts such as zirconium oxychloride, zirconium sulfate and zirconium acetate.

Selectively adsorbs fluoride, phosphate, arsenic, heavy metals (lead, cadmium, chromium) and radioactive ions. Applied in drinking water defluoridation, electroplating wastewater and groundwater remediation. It can also serve as deodorant and gas‑purification medium.
