Magnesium fluoride is a compound of halogen element fluorine and metallic element magnesium. It is a colorless tetragonal crystal or powder, tasteless, insoluble in water and alcohol, slightly soluble in dilute acid, and soluble in nitric acid. Rutile lattice, when heated under electric light, shows weak purple fluorescence. Its crystal has good polarization effect, especially suitable for ultraviolet and infrared spectra. Toxic. Very slightly soluble in water (18℃, 87mg/L), slightly soluble in dilute acid (especially nitric acid). Relative density 3.18. Melting point 1248℃. Boiling point 2260℃. Lethal dose (guinea pig, oral) 1.0g/kg. Irritant.
It is soluble in nitric acid, slightly soluble in diluted acid, insoluble in water and alcohol. It appears a weak violet fluorescence when heated under electric arc light, its crystal has upstanding polarization, and so it is fairly suitable for ultraviolet spectrum and infrared spectrum. It is toxic.
